I've been curious and interested in learning since I was a young child. As an adolescent, I developed a particular interest in the areas of psychology and sociology. This led to my earning a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor is sociology. Although I intended to pursue a graduate degree, I wanted to get a jump on making student loan payments and so with this in mind, I landed a job working for a corporation in their human resource department. I continued this path for eight years and in 1998 earned a master's degree in social work from New York University.
Soon after graduating, I began my career as a clinical social worker in an outpatient hospital setting where I worked until I launched my psychotherapy practice in Highland Park New Jersey in 2001. In addition to my private practice I've been part of the adjunct faculty in the graduate school of social work at both Rutgers University and Monmouth University. I also provided individual therapy to research participants in several studies conducted at the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies.
My experience as a psychotherapist spans more than 18 years. During this time I have worked with people on a wide array of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, parenting, and relationship difficulties. I've helped many people enjoy a better quality of life through the therapeutic relationship. I am passionate about my profession as I've witnessed people make the necessary changes to lead healthy and stable lives. Their motivation and courage provide inspiration for my continued work in this field of healing and growth.
We all want happiness. But at some point in our lives we may feel stuck or face certain challenges. Having the support of a caring therapist can help you uncover and understand more clearly what is going on and give you new ways to think about yourself and your relationship with others. Therapy should be as unique as you are. While struggle is universal, people respond differently to various types of interventions. Therefore, I will tailor treatment to meet your specific needs, temperament, and comfort level. We will work collaboratively to accomplish the goals we set.
Life coaching begins with the present and assists you in setting very clear and specific goals. Once goals are set, we will work collaboratively to develop a concrete plan to move forward. The focus is always on movement and taking action. Sessions may be time limited or ongoing depending on the nature of the issue.
Our emotions form the core of who we are and what we feel is as important as what we hear and see. Emotions are a normal part of the human experience and therefore need to be identified, acknowledged and validated. Our emotions give us insight into how we experience the world around us. However, intense symptoms of depression and anxiety can be very unsettling and lead to the experience of hopelessness and despair.
Many individuals experience symptoms associated with painful and traumatic memories. Anxiety, fear, and hopelessness are emotions that may linger after trauma has occured. Although trauma does not always lead to PTSD, its effects can wreak havoc in one's life.
Research shows the most significant factor or determinate for a successful outcome in therapy is the therapeutic relationship itself. It matters more than the therapist's training, the modality of therapy, or the nature of the issue presented. Therapy will be specific to you and your experience. My approach is creative, as well as practical and one that allows you to understand more experientially what drives and restricts you.
We grow and struggle in connection with others. Exploring past and present relationship dynamics will help you uncover how dynamics from the past may be contributing to present day struggles. In our work together, I will help you identify healthy coping strategies intended to direct your energy toward thoughts and behaviors that fulfill rather than deplete and encourage you to integrate them into a healthy lifestyle.
